Paul Kuntze: Where Baroque Meets Abstract Expressionism

Berlin-based artist Paul Kuntze brings a fresh voice to one of art’s oldest traditions. His Fresko series draws inspiration from the grandeur of Baroque ceiling frescoes and the bold freedom of Abstract Expressionism—two movements that couldn’t seem further apart, yet merge seamlessly in his work.

Baroque frescoes were all about drama and scale: vast church ceilings, layered pigments, and an intensity designed to overwhelm the viewer. Kuntze translates that sense of awe onto canvas, building surfaces through thin layers of acrylic that echo the depth and luminosity of plaster walls. Over these backgrounds, he adds textured details—symbolic “human traces” that give each work its distinctive presence.

The result isn’t a replica of history, but a reinterpretation. Kuntze keeps the emotional weight and layered complexity of fresco while stripping away the religious narrative. Instead, his paintings combine elegance, atmosphere, and a contemporary edge. His use of spray cans and custom acrylic mixes pushes the work further into the present, creating pieces that feel timeless yet unmistakably modern.

In other words, Kuntze makes fresco collectible. His canvases carry the gravitas of centuries-old tradition, but in a form that moves, adapts, and lives with us today. Minimal, architectural, and quietly powerful, they don’t just decorate a wall—they anchor it.

At Chic Evolution in Art, we are proud to present two major works from Paul Kuntze’s Fresko series—rare opportunities to collect an artist who is redefining how history and contemporary art can coexist.
