Rungploy Lorpaitoom
Born in 1990 in Bangkok, Thailand, Rungploy Lorpaitoon is a textile and installation artist whose work transforms the delicacy of fabric into an exploration of resilience, imperfection, and transformation. Her artistic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, where she developed a fascination with texture, layering, and the expressive potential of fabric. What began as an interest in material aesthetics evolved into a philosophical and emotional pursuit—an inquiry into how form, light, and fragility can reveal the human experience.
Lorpaitoon’s path toward art was shaped by a deeply personal story. Born with only four fingers on her left hand, she learned from an early age to adapt, reimagine limitations, and discover strength in difference. This sense of transformation—of turning vulnerability into creation—became a defining thread in her practice. In her own words, she views life as “dark and imperfect sometimes, but full of possibilities; mistakes can spark new experiences.”
After completing her studies in fashion, Lorpaitoon pursued a Master’s degree in Fine Arts at Silpakorn University, one of Thailand’s leading institutions for visual art. There, her creative language expanded from design to installation, as she began experimenting with fabric in spatial and sculptural contexts. Her research and practice shifted from constructing garments for the body to constructing environments for reflection—immersive spaces where textile, light, and air become part of the same living form.
Working primarily with organza, silk, and fiber, Lorpaitoon manipulates translucency and light to blur the boundaries between two and three dimensions. Her installations are not static sculptures but living environments that respond to illumination, shadow, and movement. Through these suspended forms, she explores the coexistence of strength and fragility, presence and absence—offering viewers an experience that is both meditative and sensory.
One of her most renowned projects, LIFEWAVES, exemplifies this approach. Presented internationally, the work uses layers of organza to evoke the rhythms of nature and emotion—suggesting waves of thought, memory, and renewal. In 2019, Lifewaves was exhibited at NordArt in Büdelsdorf, Germany, where it earned Lorpaitoon the Biafarin Award, based on visitor votes. The same installation has since been showcased at Chic Evolution in Art in Miami, USA, and at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre’s People Gallery, affirming her growing international presence.
While rooted in material experimentation, Lorpaitoon’s practice ultimately reflects a philosophical inquiry into life itself. Her work invites viewers to see imperfection not as damage, but as transformation—to recognize that what cannot be undone may instead give shape to something new. Through fabric, she materializes the emotional oscillations of existence: the tension between breaking and mending, between control and surrender.
By bridging her background in design with the language of contemporary sculpture, Rungploy Lorpaitoon continues to expand the boundaries of textile art. Her installations, delicate yet commanding, speak to the universal experience of navigating vulnerability and renewal. In her hands, fabric becomes more than material—it becomes emotion, light, and the space between what is seen and what is felt.
